Reading Local Portland interview: Sara Guest

Portland is full of amazing readers, writers, publishers, and other literary folk.  One of our goals at Reading Local Portland is to track down and interview every single one of them…well, okay, not every single one.  But we are shooting to publish more interviews with local literati here on RLP.

Sara Guest, who kindly gave us today’s interview, is a poet and novelist who works with Write Around Portland.  She is currently one of two William Stafford Writing Fellows (Jeff Coleman is the other), and she will be one of the hosts of this Sunday’s William Stafford Birthday Event at the Writers’ Dojo.  Sara has recently taught at PNCA and will lead a Literary Arts Delve seminar in March and April.

Each Day In January Brings a New Sale at Title Wave Used Bookstore

titlewave_bookstoreAs the Multnomah County Library system continues it’s switch over to an RFID tracking system, the Title Wave Used Bookstore continues to receive truckloads of books the library has decided to move out of its system.  To help clear out some of this new inventory Title Wave has been running a different sale each day in January.

For instance today (1-7) is “50% off all items in the Dewey categories 000-299,” which consist of Computer Science, information, general works, philosophy, psychology, religion and spirituality.  Tomorrow’s (1-8) sale is “buy any two used items, get one of equal or lesser value for free.”  Each day brings something new, except for Sunday’s when the bookstore is closed and January 18th when they are closed in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.s birthday.

I was just in the store yesterday and it is packed to the hilt, with several employees in the back going through the crates of books that continue to come in.  So if you are in the market for great books at a cheap price, and really who isn’t, than now would be a good time to head on over to Title Wave.

Multnomah County Libraries Invite You To Read The Classics

This post is authored by contributor, Teresa Bergen.  Ms. Bergen is the author of the novel Killing The President, and in addition to writing, transcribes and edits oral histories, paints animal portraits, makes costume devil horns, teaches yoga, and plays bass in an indie rock band.

flaubert_bovaryMany Portlanders want to read classic books, but prefer not to tackle them alone. At least, that’s what I gathered from my first time participating in a library-sponsored read the classics group. Two of my friends have been going for a while, and invited me along. It turned out to be a lively and mentally stimulating way to spend a winter afternoon.

Here’s how it works: readers sign up online at the library’s website. Then they go to whichever library is sponsoring the group. Participants pick up a copy of the classic, which they keep until the group meets. They return their books at the meeting. They can sign up for the whole series, or drop in for book or two. Reed College professors lead each group. The discussion lasts two hours. All groups meet on Sunday afternoons.

What Portland Bookstore Do You Shop At?

Everyone has different reasons for shopping at one bookstore or another.  For some it’s primarily location, i.e. it’s my “neighborhood bookstore.”  For others it may be about selection.  Yet another reason could be the quality of booksellers employed at the store, or a connection with the store’s owner.  Or perhaps price is the main driver. With these thoughts in mind, I thought I would open up a post for you to chime in on what Portland bookstore you shop at and why.

My answer would be the Powell’s Cedar Hills Crossing store, with the primary reason being that it’s the closest indie store to my house.  I try to get around to several of the other Portland indie bookstores as often as I can, but when my wife gives me an hour break from being a stay-at-home dad I know that I can spend more of that hour with my nose in a book rather than smelling the exhaust from the car in front of me, if I go to the Cedar Hills store.  As an added bonus, their selection of both books and magazines is fantastic.

What about you?

What Are You Reading?

Taking a short blogging break.  I will be back tomorrow with a full list of the remaining literary events for the week.  But before I sign off, I wanted to open up the comments below for you to share any good (or bad) books that you have read lately or are reading right now.  You can earn a point in this month’s contest while you’re at it!

Until tomorrow, happy reading!
