8th Annual Teen Art Show (Beaverton City Library, @10:00am): The Beaverton City Library Once again invites area teens to display their artistic visions at our 8th Annual Teen Art Show! The show will open with refreshments on Saturday, February 27 at 10:00 a.m. and run until Sunday, March 7. During the week, the show will be open from 3:00 p.m. until the library closes, from 10:00 a.m. until close on Saturday, and from 1:00 p.m. until close on Sundays. Come by to enjoy art from our community’s youth!

Bringing History to Life (Lewis & Clark College, Miller Center for the Humanities, @9:30am): Lewis & Clark College Special Collections in cooperation with the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation will host a series of three lectures by Stephen Dow Beckham, Gary E. Moulton, and Roger Wendlick. Recently all three of these individuals have spent time working on historical projects in the Lewis & Clark College Special Collections, and at this event the three will share their discoveries.

Story and Song: A Benefit for Bradley Rosen (The Blue Monk, @7:00pm, $8): Bradley Rosen was recently hospitalized with a staph infection in his spine, and now his fellow Dangerous Writers members are holding a benefit reading to help pay for his medical bills. An impressive line up includes Tom Spanbauer, Margaret Malone, Monica Drake, Cheryl Strayed & Emily Chenoweth. Musical guests include Highwater, Nicole Berke and Closureyes!

Mapping History: How Narrative Nonfiction Brings the Past Alive (PSU, Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 298, @11:00am): What is narrative nonfiction? How does it differ from other literature? How do writers use it to bring history alive? In this public conversation, award-winning author Paul Collins will discuss how various authors use narrative nonfiction to animate works like The Ghost Map. Collins, a professor at Portland State, is the author of five books and regularly appears on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday as their “literary detective.”

Sarah Gottesdiener and Dexter Flowers Zine Release (In Other Words Women’s Books & Resources, @7:00pm, $2): Sarah Gottesdiener and Dexter Flowers present an art book opening. Flowers and Gottesdiener have created a limited edition art book/zine. The two have been close friends and collaborators for years, and both are trying something new–writing for Gottesdiener, and art/ for Flowers, together, in one book. Dexter Flowers is a Portland Writer. Her work has been published in Baby, Remember My Name, It’s so You, Portland Queer, and she has toured the U.S.A. with Sister Spit. Sarah Gottesdiener is an artist, musician, and designer. A recent series of work, “Yoko & Moon”, was published by Publication Studio in 2009. Featuring readings by celebrated local writers Wayne Bund and Hope Hitchcock. (all are invited to karaoke after!)

Margaret Erhart (Powell’s Books on Hawthorne, @7:30pm): Set against the backdrop of the brooding and sensual landmark, Margaret Erhart’s The Butterflies of Grand Canyon (Plume) is the story of how a young woman’s heart is awakened and a decades-old mystery is solved. Books-to-Action (Hillsdale Library, @6:00pm): Read and discuss “Where I Slept” by Transition Projects. In 2007, Portland residents of Transition Projects shelters were asked to photograph the places they slept while living on the streets. With their disposable cameras and a willingness to show us their truth, they created a discomforting book that serves as a stark reminder that we can do better. Engage in a community service project related to homelessness, organized by the Boomer Initiative at Hands On Greater Portland. Books-to-Action is a quarterly series sponsored by Multnomah County Library and Hands On Greater Portland, partners with Life by Design Northwest.

Ink Splash (Writers’ Dojo, @10:00am, $15 suggested donation): Ink Splash is an annual workshop for young writers offered in conjunction with the submission period for Ink-Filled Page’s Youth Issue. Join the editors and special guest poetry ambassador Celeste Thompson for an inspiring day of literary creation. The day will include poetry writing prompts as well as personal creation time. We’ll also workshop one of your poems or stories, highlighting your writing talent and offering suggestions for further exploration. Light refreshments will be provided. This workshop is geared toward young adults in grades 6–12. Bring: Four copies of a poem or story to workshop.
