Pacific University’s 2012 Whiteley Distinguished Lecture will feature an unanticipated reunion of sorts between award-winning film maker Bill Carterand University faculty memberDijana Ihas.
Carter will speak about his experiences in war-torn Bosnia while producing his acclaimed documentary Miss Sarajevo, a collaboration between him and rock band U2.
The lecture, free and open to the public, will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27 in Pacific’s Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center (2014 Cedar Street).
A showing of Miss Sarajevo will precede Carter’s talk. While filming, Carter unknowingly filmed Ihas as a member of the Sarajevo Orchestra while it practiced in the basement of a bombed-out building.
Ihas and Carter did not know one another during the filming, and will meet for the first time at the lecture.
A reception will follow, and Carter will also partake in a book-signing of his two literary works, Fools Rush In and Red Summer, both of which will be available for purchase.
The Whiteley Distinguished Lecture is an annual offering of Pacific’sCollege of Arts & Sciences.
This year’s lecture is presented by the College’s School of Arts & Humanities. The lecture is funded through a generous grant by the Benjamin and Elaine Whiteley Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation. Benjamin Whiteley (Hon. ’01) is a Trustee Emeritus.

SCHAFFNER PRESS SET TO RE-RELEASE TODD GRIMSON’S VAMPIRE CLASSIC “STAINLESS” ON VALENTINES DAY
Portland, Oregon Author Recently Called “The Greatest Horror Writer You’ve Never Read” by UK’s Guardian Newspaper
Portland, Ore. If you’re looking for an escape from the scary holiday we call Valentines Day, then Todd Grimson’s horror classic“Stainless” may be the perfect new release for you.
“Stainless” is a darkly romantic vampire novel set in a noir landscape of 1990’s Los Angeles and features a strong female protagonist named Justine. Unlike the vampires that came before her, Justine does not shun crosses, she watches horror movies on television, and she sets upon her prey in an almost apologetic way, never killing her victims but leaving them unconscious instead.
She soon finds herself entwined in a very human sexual relationship with Keith, a down-on-his-luck rock guitarist whose hands have recently been mangled by a gang of drug dealers. Justine nurtures Keith out of his depression and addiction as he in turn becomes her lover and accomplice in her nocturnal predations. The relationship between the undead and the living is realistically and tragically portrayed as Keith acts both as Justine’s enabler and unwitting nemesis and, in this classic role reversal, ends up having to destroy the one he loves in order to save her.
