Reading Frenzy is unlike any other place in Portland.  The events, the blog, the items on the shelves, all exude an integral link withPortland’s creative community.  This is due in large part to Chloe Eudaly, the shops faithful proprietress, and her passion for supporting and promoting independent publishers and artists.  To help prove the point, here is a look at Reading Frenzy’s upcoming events:

  • Zines on Toast Tour Kickoff! UK Zine Culture with Alex Wrekk and Friends! (August 26th, 7pm)
  • NW Passage Book Release Party with Marc Moscato and Friends! (August 27th, 7pm)
  • Together Gallery Collective Show (Sep. 2nd)
  • Please Don’t Bomb the Suburbs Reading and Signing with William Upski Wimsatt (Sep. 3rd, 7pm)
  • If You Lived Here You’d Already Be Home Reading and Signing with John Jodzio (Sep. 4th, 7pm)
  • Death Magazine No. 2 Release Party with Forrest Martin and Friends! (Sep. 8th, 7pm)
  • Rewild or Die! Book Release Party with Urban Scout (Sep. 15th, 7pm)
  • Richard Yates Reading and Signing with Tao Lin (Sep. 28th, 7pm)

You won’t see these events anywhere else, and if they disappeared it would remove an incredibly beneficial vehicle for Portland’s creative set to reach out to new audiences.  Cue Kickstarter to the rescue!

Reading Frenzy is currently running a Kickstarter project to “help subsidize [their] four-dozen or so free annual events.” The $5,000 their looking to raise will “cover roughly half of [their] annual expenses for events.” Those who donate will receive a variety of goodies, most important of which is the continued event programming.

As the project description says, Reading Frenzy has “stuff you want, does things you like, supports causes you care about, and feeds you snacks and free beer on a regular basis. Let’s make this happen.”  So I realize times are tough right now, but please do “make this happen,” and chip in what you can, even a little bit will go a long way.

Check out the Kickstarter project page for the full details, and in case you need further convincing, here are a few “Reading Frenzy Friends” to push you over the edge:

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
