Editor’s Note: Throughout the month of April, Reading Local and Portland poet Sage Cohen will celebrate National Poetry Month by featuring a new tip each day.

Ask and ye shall receive

Ask a poet you admire to recommend a poetry collection. Read it. As you read, make note of what you admire, what you find confusing, and what you’d like to imitate in your own work. Discuss the poetry collection with the person who recommended it. When you’ve thoroughly digested the poems (and I don’t expect that will be today), write a review of the book on amazon.com, goodreads.com or another online resource where your insights will benefit other readers of poetry – and the writing of the review will benefit you.

Sage Cohen is the author of WRITING THE LIFE POETIC: An Invitation to Read and Write Poetry (Writers Digest Books, 2009), THE PRODUCTIVE WRITER: Tips & Tools for Writing More, Stressing Less and Creating success (Writer’s Digest Books, forthcoming in 2010) and the poetry collection Like the Heart, the World. Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
