Container Corps is a new arts press and gallery located on 1322 N. Killingsworth that can design, print, bind, and consult on projects ranging from “your rad new zine” to “menus for your food cart.”  They are currently accepting submissions for artists books, literature, and other projects.

One of the more fascinating products they have developed is a joint project with local furniture maker Jonathan Nussbaum dubbed Xylobooks, which are handmade blank books bound in hardwoods salvaged from the scraps created by furniture production.  As the Container Corps website points out “each book is unique, with variations in grain, color, and knotholes,” and come in a variety of  “beautiful Northwest woods” like Oregon bigleaf maple, western walnut, juniper, and cherry.

The binding is one invented by Container Corps and provides “a portable writing surface” as well as “a place to hold cards and other bits of ephemera.”  For a small fee Container Corps can even swap out used blocks of pages for fresh ones, allowing you to continue using the book indefinitely.  You can see more pictures of the Xylobooks by clicking through the examples at the bottom of this page.

Lastly, if you are looking for an excuse to go see the Xylobooks in person, Container Corps will be hosting an exhibition and book release party for Nick Abraham’s “If This is You, Please Don’t Sue” tonight (3-25) at 6pm.
