Howdy Book Folk!
I know you are out enjoying President’s Day, but just in case you are looking for some wonderful links to local sites talking about Books, well I have a few right here in my bag just for you.
Oregon Live
Portland writer Lidia Yuknavitch signs two-book deal with Hawthorne Books
-The venerable Mr. Baker at the Oregonian got this one before we did, but it’s exciting news for Hawthorne Books, Ms. Yuknavitch and all of us. Looking forward to these books.
Publish your own book? It’s easy. Author Steve Almond explains
-Okay so this ends up being a link to a link to the article on The Rumpus (which I love by the way), but I think Self-publishing should be a continued conversation in today. Not only to review its successes and horrible pitfalls, but to help remove the stigma of such a plan of action for authors.
Bookbroads
Books that keep you awake at night
-Dark Scribe magazine lists its winners for the Third Annual Black Quill award. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn and Drood by Dan Simmons take the honors. I’ve been meaning to pick up Drood for some time so it’s always an extra incentive when a book you want receives and award.
The Glass Room is Terrific!
-I love it when readers, especially the wonderful people who sell me my books, are so excited about a book that they can’t wait to finish reading a book before they recommend it to you.
Books are my only Friends
Another entry in the, “Why the Kindle may be a good thing” Fight
-Another link to a link, but it’s an interesting thought about how Ereaders could make books better. Proof remains to be seen, but it’s an interesting thought. Also, can we all agree to stop using Kindle as the word that takes the place of Ereader? There are several machines that are better than the Kindle. Plus, machines that use Epub will give you a much better chance to read the Ebooks you buy now on future machines.
Hawthorne Books
Bookmarks: Why we don’t buy them
-Where do you think the Internet got its name for those wonderful little links you keep on your toolbar? Most folks use whatever they can find, but if you’re like me (and admittedly few are) you might collect them. A fun discussion on HB blog.
Rose City Reader
Bribery!
-Okay, I don’t have children yet, but the thought of my own child not wanting/enjoying reading, scares me. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s important to live a life and get out into the world to see what’s out there, but Books have been such a huge part of my growth as a human, as a writer, as an individual that the thought that there are so many children out there that don’t like reading actually freaks me out.

An Embarrassment of Riches: The Powell’s Interview with Kevin Sampsell
-Is it okay if I call Kevin Sampsell the Don of the Small-Press Literary Scene? A great interview with him about his memoir A Common Pornography.
