When compiling the list of events for this week I came across a couple new literary journals published right here in PDX that I wanted to pass along.

The first is and&review, an “arts publication” from Mia Nolting and Rachel Peddersen.  Here is a bit more taken from their about page:

and&review is an arts publication based in Portland, Oregon that shares work from local and international artists and writers. We compile work that loosely adheres to a chosen theme for each issue, showing both contemporary trends in art-making as well as work from the past. As readers, researchers, artists, and designers, we are interested in collections—connected ideas that can be compiled and offered as food for thought. and&review exists in both printed and online formats. Everything is free.

Issue #1 is currently available online and at these fine local establishments: Reading Frenzy, Nationale, Stumptown on 3rd, PNCA, and the Together Gallery.  A party celebrating the release of Issue #1 will be held tomorrow (2-16) at 7:00pm at Tiga.

The second is Death magazine, a publication by Forrest Martin.  Here is a bit from the magazines about page:

Death: what is it?

At first thought, the word may inspire dark associations. Closer investigation reveals a spectrum of colors and considerations, all the layers of sorrow and humor and ordinariness that might be expected from the other side of life.

Death magazine isn’t simply reports of human mortality, but perspectives on how death arranges, enhances or obfuscates life – at times metaphorically, at times not. In a bed, on the train, at a computer, at the mall; we all have daily relationships with it. Alongside every overlooked gesture, death is the shadow reality reminding us, “this isn’t going to last forever.”

Issue # 1 features contributions from the likes of Tom Spanbauer, Scott Barry, Maya Hayuk, Erika Somogyi and several others.  For some background on the genesis of this project, check out Chloe Eudaly’s terrific interview with Martin. Reading Frenzy will play host to the release party for Death this Wednesday (2-17) at 7:00pm.
