It’s interesting to me that there is this budding movement within the youth of our nation that revolves around poetry.  Granted this isn’t your fathers poetry, but it certainly seems to speak to this generation in a way that poetry can’t.  I have heard some dismiss and even disparage slam poetry, as somehow not achieving their idea of what poetry is or should strive to be.  While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions, and slam poetry may become better overall for having to overcome these criticisms, I tend to live by the “to each their own” motto.  If a person comes to poetry because they were inspired by Anis Mojgani, is that any less than if they had picked up a copy of Mountain Interval?

pdxpoetryslamTonight (12-13) presents an opportunity to see for yourself what all the fuss is about, as the Portland Poetry Slam takes place at Backspace starting at 7:30. The event is open to all ages and a $5 suggested donation is asked for at the door. The “undeniably entertaining” Morris Stegosaurus will be in the building as well.  Check out the Portland Poetry Slam Facebook page for more details.

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
