“Storytelling rulz. Readings DROOL.” Or so says the Back Fence PDX Twitter feed, and I have to say I can’t find much reason to disagree with the sentiment. Storytelling is on the rise, and is filling a need for connection that has been missing from our lives due to decades of isolating social and economic policy. As if to prove the point, Back Fence is breaking sales records with each show, Mortified PDX’s 2nd Anniversary show sold out days in advance, and the last True Stories left me unintentionally spewing IPA in a fit of laughter.
It’s only fitting that the culmination of a dream has these three powerhouses together tomorrow night (12-2) at the Bagdad Theater for a special event dubbed Word to the Wise(men). The featured performers for the night include: Dayvid Figler and Bridget Pilloud representing Back Fence, Stacy Bolt and Scott Poole representing True Stories, and Lorri Ferraro and Jimmy Radosta representing Mortified. Each performer will attempt to delight the crowd with “true tales of holiday hell…or heaven.” Although they promise it will mostly be about holiday hell, as that is much funnier. The host of all this madness will be the “exceedingly huggable” Adam Shearer of Wienland, and extra special musical guest John Roderick from The Long Winters will also add to the festivities.
As if all of that talent in one location weren’t enough to whet your appetite there will also be hot elfettes handing out tasty cupcakes from Saint Cupcakes. Need I say more? OK maybe just one more very important thing. The shows producers are strongly encouraging all attendees to bring new, unwrapped kids’ books to donate to the Children’s Relief Nursery. [...] Word to the Wise(men) (Bagdad Theater, @7:30, $12 online/$15 at the door): Mortified, Back Fence PDX and True Stories join forces once again (after the successful Word to Your Mother event last Spring) for Word to the Wise(men) — a night of cheers, tears and burning ears. Two storytellers from Back Fence, and two performers from each True Stories and Mortified will delight with true tales of holiday hell…or heaven. But mostly hell, probably. Hosting the night is the hilarious Adam Shearer of Weinland. And special music guest John Roderick from The Long Winters will rock some solo music. Hanukkah Elfettes clad in retro-inspired Popina Swimwear, and Rosabode Aviator Caps will hand out free Saint Cupcakes to the audience. If you’re worried about coal in your stocking, bring a new, unwrapped kids’ book to donate to the Children’s Relief Nursery. Doors open at 6:30, show starts at 7:30.
