Today’s Featured Book Event:
Jennie Shortridge presents When She Flew (Annie Bloom’s Books, @7:30pm): Police officer Jessica Villareal has always played by the book and tried to do the right thing: She’s worked hard at her job and even harder at her family. Despite all that, she finds herself approaching midlife divorced, estranged from her daughter, alone… and completely unhappy. And she’s wondering if she ever made a right choice in her life.
But then Jess discovers an Iraq vet and his young daughter living off the radar in the Oregon woods, avoiding the comforts—and curses—of modern life. Her colleagues on the force are determined to uproot and separate Lindy and her father, but Jess knows the damage of losing those you love, and believes the pair is safer and happier together.
Jess recognizes her chance to make a difference by doing something she’s never dared. Because even though she’s used to playing by the rules, there are times when they need to be broken…
Other Book Events Today:
OWC Presents! (Looking Glass Bookstore, @7:00pm): Winners of the Oregon Writers Colony Short Story Contest and the Elizabeth Bolton Poetry Contest will read from their winning entries. OWC Presents! is a series of FREE workshops for or about writers and writing. Workshops are held the 4th Monday of each month at Looking Glass Bookstore, 7983 SE 13th Ave., Portland (in the Sellwood neighborhood)
Caffeinated Art presents Sophie Tree, Pam Crow and Scott Reis (Three Friends Coffee House, @7:00pm): Sophie Tree is a Portland-based writer and mother of three growing gals and the most mellow golden retriever ever.
KBOO Benefit Reading w/ Amy Goodman and Dennis Moynihan (Bagdad Theater, @7:30pm, $10-25): KBOO is excited that Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!, and the editor of Breaking the Sound Barrier, Denis Moynihan are coming to Portland and doing a benefit for KBOO.
Amy Goodman breaks through the corporate media’s lies, sound-bites, and silence in this wide-ranging new collection of articles. In place of the usual suspects, the “experts” who, in Goodman’s words, “know so little about so much, explain the world to us, and get it so wrong,” this accessible, lively collection allows the voices the corporate media exclude and ignore to be heard loud and clear. From community organizers in New Orleans, to the courageous American soldiers who’ve said “No” to Washington’s wars, to the victims of torture and police violence, we are given the extraordinary opportunity to hear ordinary people standing up and speaking out. As Willie Nelson says, “There is no one who should be more on the mainstream media, every day reminding us and giving us a glimpse of the power of one.”
Badass (Powell’s Books on Hawthorne, @7:30pm): Ben Thompson’s Badass: A Relentless Onslaught of the Toughest Warlords, Vikings, Samurai, Pirates, Gunfighters, and Military Commanders to Ever Live (Harper) presents a collection of the most awesome historical figures to ever run screaming into battle. Thompson will be joined by book illustrator Matt Haley.
Applique Your Way (Powells City of Books, @7:30pm): Appliqué Your Way (Chronicle) goes beyond traditional quiltwork with 35 sweet stitching projects from crafter extraordinaire Kayte Terry. The book is designed for easy use with a lay-flat Wire-O binding and a handy back pocket that holds pattern and template pieces.
