Today’s Featured Book Event:

Words Worth Paying For? Publishing in the Age of Electronic Readers (UO Portland, White Stag Block-70 NW Couch St., @6:00pm): Electronic book devices such as Amazon’s Kindle sony_ereaderand Sony E-reader are part of a new wave in digital publishing–one that’s drawing attention in the media and creating an uncertain world for publishers, authors, journalists, librarians and booksellers. How do digital books change us as writers, publishers, and readers?

A panel including: Katherine Dunn, author of Geek Love; Dennis Stovall, director of publishing and publisher of Ooligan Press at PSU; and Vailey Oehlke, director of Multnomah County Libraries. will discuss what it all means, and where we might be heading. We’ll share conversation, food, and drink as part of a lively evening hosted by the UO Portland and partners in the White Stag Block. All are welcome to this free, public event.

Other Book Events Today:

Staged Readings of Grace Paley and Etgar Keret (Mittleman Jewish Community Center, @7:00, $10): Jewish Theatre Collaborative joins with the MJCC to honor Jewish Book Month (Nov.11th to Dec.11th.) in high style with word for word, staged readings of the captivating  and engaging short stories of beloved American author, the late Grace Paley, and Etgar Keret, one of Israel’s hippest and most popular storytellers.

Portland actors, Elizabeth Huffman, Jamie Rae, Nick Ferucci and Rick Sanders will sail Paley and Keret’s stories off the page and on to the stage for a wonderful evening of diverse, short story magic.  Targeted to bring together the empty nesters with the 20 somethings, the evening promises delightful surprises for both.  Sacha Reich, Executive Director, promises “If you are unfamiliar with these writers, be prepared, hold on to your seat and expect to join the cult following. “  The event will be followed by a small wine and cheese reception.

Greg Bear (Powells Books at Cedar Hills Crossing, @7:00pm): Mariposa (Vanguard Press) is the new near-future thriller from bestselling author Greg Bear, starring the three FBI agents from Quantico. The Talos Corporation trains soldiers and security forces from around the world, with a more sinister motive than anyone realizes: the destruction of the federal government.

VoiceCatcher 4 Release Reading (Powells Books on Hawthorne, @7:30pm): The VoiceCatcher Editorial Collective debuts new work from VoiceCatcher 4, its fourth anthology of local women’s writing. A mix of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry, the reading will be hosted by VoiceCatcher 4 editor Jennifer Springsteen and include work by Paulann Petersen, Abby Mims, Liz Prato, Carolyn Moore, Nancy Flynn, Kaitlyn Burch, and Penelope Scambly Schott.

Oaks Park Pentimento (Powells City of Books, @7:30pm): Jim Lommasson and Inara Verzemnieks’s Oaks Park Pentimento (OSU Press) records the blurring of past and present, a moment when two generations of paintings collided to create remarkable new images on the historic carousel at Portland’s Oaks Amusement Park.

PSU MFA Monday Night Lecture Series features: James Yood (Portland State, Shattuck Hall Annex, @7:30pm): James Yood will lecture about his work! The public is invited (its free, tell your friends)
