slater_bookofknowledgePeople love treasure hunts.  They also love to win prizes.  When you combine those two things together with the promotion of local independent bookstores and local authors, everyone comes out smiling.  Jessica Glenn of Mind Buck Media has done just that in a creative approach to promoting David Slater‘s “The Book of Knowledge,” the newest in his mysterious “Sacred Books” young adult series.

So what exactly is taking place, and how does it work?  Here are the details provided via email by Ms. Glenn:

Go to one (or all!) of the participating bookstores [Annie Bloom's, Broadway Books, A Children's Place, Reading Frenzy, Guapo Comics, Green Bean Books, and Looking Glass Bookstore] and ask for the Indie Bookstore Treasure Hunt clue at the counter. The answer to the clue will be in the bookstore and will be visible without opening any merchandise. When you figure the clue out, tell the clerk and receive prizes and a ticket good for one Grand Prize entry! Collect up to 8 grand prize entries for the best odds at winning on November 15th at A Children’s Place!

Every successful treasure hunter will receive a prize at every participating bookstore plus an additional coupon and/or prize from the individual bookstore, a 10% off ticket for Slater’s books at the release party and one entry into the grand prize drawing.  The Grand Prize in question is a $200 shopping spree at the participating independent book store of the winner’s choice plus the Top Secret first chapter to the next book in the series, ‘The Book of Maps’!

The November 15th Grand Prize drawing and release party at A Children’s Place Bookstore will also feature readings from notable Portland children’s authors, Bart King and Dale Bayse.

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
