wallace_booksI stopped into Wallace Books for the first time the other day in order to pick up a gift certificate owed to Rose City Reader for one of her past triumphs in the Reading Local Contest, and was instantly regretting having not made my way out there before.  Located in a converted house on the corner of SE Milwaukie and Knapp, this shop is nothing but books as soon as you walk into the door.  Literally every square inch that could in someway be converted to shelving has been, which is perfect for those who are fans of browsing until they find that book they must have.  I joked with my wife when I got home that if I hadn’t settled down, my bachelor pad would have ended up looking the exact same way.

Tomorrow (Sat. 12th) Wallace Books will be celebrating their 12th Anniversary from 10am-7pm.  All used books will be 25% off, and tasty lemonade and cookies will be served.  The ever delightful owner, Julie Wallace, has been emphasizing it as a great way for teachers to pick up some books for their classrooms on the cheap.  Teacher or not, 25% off of books that are already inexpensive is a great reason to get out of the house and do some shopping!

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
