Her poetic lyrics and soulful voice speak of love, sex, passion and consciousness. One listen will leave you feeling liberated, motivated and full of positive energy. Angie’s debut album ‘Cycle of Fruit’ was released in 2008 on Independent Freedom Tribe label and is now available on www.angieevans.com and www.myspace.com/angievans Angie believes in sisterhood, pride, good espresso, handmade organic bar soap, pino grigio on a cold day, green vegetables and using the “F” word as much as possible. Say it with me….. “FEMINISM, FEMINISM, FEMINIST!”

Amber Darland is one of the most exciting up-and-coming folk/pop singer songwriters of the Pacific Northwest. Her music is compelling because it’s both political and deeply personal – and by design, purposeful. Darland’s delivery of powerful, honest poetry with pure vocals, strong melodies, infectious rhythms and personal stories keep the audience engaged and experiencing a wave of emotions. In August 2009, Amber Darland will begin her 2009/10 national touring schedule to promote the release of her debut full-length album “Truce”. www.amberdarland.com

S.M. Stirling (Powells Books at Cedar Hills Crossing, @7:00pm): Bestselling author S. M. Stirling continues his “epic of survival and rebirth” (Library Journal) with The Sword of the Lady (Tor), the third novel in his Change series, which chronicles a modern world without technology. Rudi Mackenzie has journeyed far across the land that was once the United States of America, hoping to find the source of the world-altering event that has come to be known as The Change. His final destination is Nantucket, an island inhabited by a mere 200 people who claim to have been transported there from out of time. There, Rudi finds a beautifully made sword waiting for him — and once he takes it up, nothing will ever be the same.

The Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier’s Education (Powells City of Books, @7:30pm): In his autobiography The Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier’s Education (Penguin Press), Army Ranger Craig Mullaney recounts his unparalleled education in the art of war, and he reckons with the hard wisdom that only battle itself can bestow. “Almost impossible to put down for anyone interested in the modern U.S. Army or in modern warfare in general,” declares Booklist.

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
