For most of you the following list of Portland “book blogs” won’t contain any surprises. For some though there may be a few you were unaware of, and it’s for you that I put together this post. My belief is the more blogs we have out their covering some aspect of the Portland literary community, the more likely it is the stories featuring this community will reach their intended audience. So in that regard we are lucky to have such a great collection of well maintained, informative, and interesting blogs to choose from. Feel free to leave links in the comments below to any I may have missed.
News, Reviews, and Extras:
These blogs offer a little bit of everything…
Portland Mercury Books- Alison Hallett provides excellent reviews of local literature, as well as books from authors who are in town for a reading. You can also catch her on Blogtown, where she always has timely posts about upcoming events and other happenings in the Portland area.
PDX Writer Daily- Although they are on vacation right now, you can look to PDXWD for great coverage of local lit events, reviews, the occasional comic, interviews, and other interesting tidbits their contributors come across.
Oregon Live Books- Jeff Baker consistently features interesting stories from the Portland and broader Oregon literary community. Great for reviews, profiles, and David Biespiel’s commentary on the state of poetry.
Willamette Week Words- Good for reviews and the occasional story.
Readers:
Portland has some voracious readers…who love to talk about books
Rose City Reader- Gilion doesn’t take her role as “rose city reader” lightly. How she reads and reviews so many books we may never know. Her reviews are always crisp and to the point.
Worducopia- Ali J’s love for reading and writing comes through in each post. She is fully entrenched in the book blogging community.
What Kates Reading- Kate brings the book club to her blog. Consistent and entertaining reviews.
The Book Pirate- You will love the “YouTubesdays!”
Books & Bards- Equal parts commentary, reviews, and original fiction. Just found this site and I’m glad I did!
Bookstores:
A great way to get a peak inside running a bookstore…and the people who are doing it
Bookbroads- Broadway Books’ blog provides intelligent and entertaining commentary on everything from the books they are reading to their neigbor indie business.
Powells Books Blog- Guest posts. Q & A’s a plenty. Original essays. Book Industry News. Review-A-Day. A lively and entertaining blog.
Murder By The Book- Lengthy and fulfilling reviews of the latest in mystery novels.
Boone Bridge Books- The posts may not come as frequently as some of the others, but when they do they are almost always worth reading.
Ampersand- A visually and intelectually stimulating look at what Myles has going on in the store.
Green Bean Books- Though just started, it’s already a great place to check for reviews of childrens books.
Lit Organizations:
A variety of organizations have one thing in common…a love for great literature
Literary Arts Blogs- Paperfort is a great resource for whats happening in the Portland and broader Oregon literary community. While Woots is a fabulous peak inside the minds of our younger generation of writers.
Tin House Blog- Fresh onto the scene and making waves. Tin House’s blog is quickly establishing itself as a must read.
Multnomah County Library Blogs- These three blogs provide a great look at whats going on at the library as well as the books that stock its shelves
The Writers Dojo- You can’t go wrong when you bring together the talented writers the Dojo has.
Seeing Indigo- Good for writers and readers alike. Their event picks and writing prompts are always insightful.
Declaration Editing- An entertaining mix of polls, “uh-ohs,” wonderful profiles of local lit journals, and more.
I was going to include Portland writer blogs in this post but decided I would do so in another, as there are enough of them out there that they deserve their own space. And you know how much writers like to receive the special treatment! As I said above, please feel free to leave links in the comments below to any I may have missed, which I surely have.
