rethinkingpi_brownOver on the blog Pearl of Carol you can win a copy of the Ooligan Press mini-book, Rethinking Paper and Ink.  She has two copies to give away, and to be entered in the drawing to win one, all you have to do is leave a comment on either of her two wonderful posts on PSU Professor Dennis Stovall’s seminar on the publishing industry from Ooligan Press’ Write to Publish Conference.

The book offer is just a bonus, the real treasure is her analysis of Stovall’s seminar on the publishing industry.  Including insights on the “move away from credit to cash refunds for unsold books, the growing influence of print-on-demand options leading to the increase in the number of self-published books, the emerging importance of amateur reviewers,” and the impact of authors abandoned by large publishers creating small presses.  She promises a further post on “how to make money in publishing in this new environment.”

Rethinking Paper and Ink is part of Ooligan Press’ move towards sustainable publishing, and is the result of funding received from a grant given to PSU “to support faculty—and student—created projects that focus on sustainability.”  Ooligan has started a blog that will focus on this new initiative, which right now includes a great Q & A with Melissa Brumer and Janine Eckhart, the founders of Ooligan’s sustainable publishing initiative.

What direction do you think the publishing industry will take?  A continued move to the small press?  Authors increasingly self-publishing and removing the publisher as we now know it all together?
