paulhawkenBeing that I can’t even remember who gave the commencement address at my graduation, I’m quite jealous of this years graduating class at the University of Portland who were treated to a speech none of them should ever forget.

Renowned author and environmental activist Paul Hawken advised the students that “the most unrealistic person in the world is the cynic, not the dreamer. Hopefulness only makes sense when it doesn’t make sense to be hopeful,” and then told them that “this is your century. Take it and run as if your life depends on it.”

I highly encourage you to check out the full transcript of the address here.

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
