In my humble opinion, one of the greatest things an indie bookstore can do is to have a store cat. Of course my opinion may be tainted due to my wife being such a cat lover, something which often times buys me a few extra minutes of browsing time when we’re in a bookstore with a cat. For example, when I told her that my latest email from Annie Bloom’s announced the arrival of Molly Bloom, the new store cat, her response was to ask when we were going to make our next visit to the Multnomah Village bookstore. Now you see why I think store cats are such a good idea!
According to the email Molly Bloom is “a one-year-old black kitty with a very sweet and affectionate demeanor.” It sounds like she is still becoming comfortable with her surroundings, and so has “been pretty shy about venturing beyond the basement.” But, they have no doubt that “she’ll be a truly terrific bookstore cat,” that you will see “roaming the aisles in no time.”
Who are, or have been, some of you favorite indie store animals?
