As announced on Shelf Awareness:
Powell’s Books, Portland, Ore., is exploring a new market–a farmers market. Beginning April 25 and lasting through October 24, on the last Saturday of each month, the bookstore will operate a 10′ x 20′ booth in the Portland Farmers Market’s PSU location, where it will sell new and used books.
The book selections will change with the seasons, so that the first several themes are “going to seed,” which features titles about seed gardening and composting, and “localvores,” which highlights books about preparing local food and eating locally, while later in the year, “preserving” has books about “capturing the harvest” and “fun with fungi” focuses on books about hunting and cooking mushrooms.
In a statement, Michael Lamb, customer services manager of Powell’s, said, “Our participation in the farmers market is a natural extension of our sustainability efforts and that is part of the reason why we’ll offer used books.”
Ann Forsthoefel, executive director of the farmers market, said, “Two iconic Portland organizations are coming together to provide our shoppers a wonderful collection of books to help market-goers prepare and store the region’s bounty and grow some of their own food.”
The schedule, as noted on Powells website, is as follows:
- April 25: Going to Seed
Seed gardening and composting - May 30: Localvores
Preparing local food and eating locally - June 27: Birds and Bugs
The care and feeding of chickens and bees - July 25: Berries
Cook ‘em, eat ‘em, store ‘em - August 29: BBQ
Build it and they will come - September 26: Preserving
Capturing the harvest - October 24: Fun with Fungi
Hunting and cooking the elusive mushroom
The booth will be open from 9am-2pm, and will feature “local authors…stopping by the booth to sign and talk about their books.”

Brilliant! What a great idea! I love the food tie-in. But they should do it every weekend, not just once a month.

Rose City Reader,
I think it's a fabulous idea, and a great way to generate excitement for both of these beloved Portland institutions. Maybe this year they wanted to test the waters a little bit, and that is why they're only setting up once a month. Hopefully once the concept proves successful though, we will see them set up more frequently in subsequent years.

I hope so! I know no one wants to see the farmers' markets turn into flea markets, but the idea of a book stall at every market every week (different bookstores, not all Powell's) gets me as excited as does thinking about those first strawberries of the season!
