Western Oregon University Professor Shaun Huston has been working on a “documentary on comics culture in Portland, Oregon.”  Huston intends for the documentary to be:

an exploration of the connections between people and place, and, particularly of the qualities that seem to make Portland a vital center for comics writers, artists, and publishers and their allies in shops, libraries, and criticism.

Huston has wrapped up interviews for the film, and is currently working on “reviewing and logging footage,” with plans to move on to “additional photography this spring.”

In the interim he has created a short for the Oregon150 site about last year’s 24-Hour Comic Day at Cosmic Monkey, which you can see below (you can also view it on blip.tv).  You can also follow Huston’s progress on the documentary’s official blog.

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
