Whether you are “absolutely clueless,” or an “experienced” graphic novel reader, the Portland Graphic Novel Book Group is ready to make you part of their family.  Their aim is to create a “well-rounded graphic novel reader, featuring multiple genres varying from superhero to horror, single works and anthologies.”

Past readings have included:

Flight, Volume 4
edited by Kazu Kibuishi

Uzumaki, Volume 1
by Junji Ito
US Bank Room

Palestine
by Joe Sacco

and,

Good-bye, Chunky Rice
by Craig Thompson

The group meets the first Saturday of every month (yes this Saturday, they will be discussing Starman: Sins of the Father by James Robinson and Omega the Unknown by Steven Gerber) normally in the US Bank room at the Central Library, and sometimes they have “unofficial meetings involving trips to movies or discussions with an author &/or illustrator.” On their website you can also find a list of comic stores in the area.  The meetings are “open to all”, even if you “haven’t read the book yet.”

You can also join their meetup group here.

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
