ampersand_cowboycom3Great piece (and wonderful photos) from Portland Mercury’s Blogtown on the new Alberta St. bookstore Ampersand Vintage, which opened this past November. Ampersand’s “mission is threefold”:

- as a specialty bookshop: provide a dynamic selection of art, photography & design books, both used & new.
- as cultural preservationists: buy & sell a dynamic mix of vintage photography, historic documents & eclectic ephemera.
- as an art gallery: host monthly shows by artists whose work lends to our obsessive investigation into the colliding point between now & then, past & present, vintage & contemporary.

The bookstore reminds me of one I ran into in San Francisco while on my honeymoon a couple years ago.  I was wondering when a bookstore with this vibe was going to open up in Portland, it seemed like only a matter of time.  I look forward to visiting Ampersand in the near future, profiling them further in a future post, and maybe getting Myles Hasselhorst (the owner) to sit down for an interview.

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
