Thanks to another great find by my wife, I was introduced to the incredibly unique work of Brian Dettmer.  Granted Mr. Dettmer is not local, but his work is too fantastic not to share.

Dettmer explains his work as such, “Old books, records, tapes, maps, and other media frequently fall into a realm that too much of today’s art occupies. Their intended role has decreased or deceased and they often exist simply as symbols of the ideas they represent rather than true conveyers of content. … When an object’s intended function is fleeting, the necessity for a new approach to its form and content arises.” (Valdez 2006).

Gabe Barber started Reading Local in January of 2009 as a vehicle for exploring Portland's literary scene. He's not an aspiring author, and you won't find his work on a bookshelf or in any prestigious lit rag. He is however, a full on book nerd, with a passion for independent literature.
